Mirror Mirror On The Wall, Who’s The Ugliest One Of All?

Orange FrogfishWell, I’ve found the ugliest fish EVER! The frogfish may have many fascinating attributes, but its looks aren’t the most attractive part of this fish. Let’s look closer at this species, which has fascinated and frustrated scientists, divers, photographers, and aquarium owners for decades.

The frogfish is unique in many ways. First of all, this fish is very skittish and likes to hide in the darker areas of the reef. Frogfish can be found in many colors because they adapt to mimic the colors of their surroundings, providing excellent camouflage. The loose, prickly skin of this animal much resembles that of the warts on a toad or frog, hence the name.

What is truly unique about the frogfish is the way that it feeds. This is one of the quickest moving species in the ocean, sucking in prey in only 1/6 of a second. The frogfish is biologically designed to be an admirable predator. The circular gill fns are located below the pectoral fins, so frogfish appear to show no movement. Prey is attracted to the puff on the top of the frogfish’s head, and when they attempt to pluck it, they are sucked into the upturned mouth of the frogfish. Only a fast action camera can capture the extremely quick movement.

Keeping frogfish in aquariums is somewhat difficult, only because they have a tendency to eat your other fish. If you are caring for frogfish on their own, they’ll be relatively easy to care for.

Have you ever owned a frogfish? Well, if so, please let me know how your experiences went. I’m excited to learn more about this unique fish.
